12 tips for job seekers applying right now

Given the highly competitive job market right now, finding a new role can take a while. From abstract job listings to a lack of responses from companies, there are many things one must navigate to find and land their dream job. That said, simple measures like updating the resume, preparing for interviews, sending a follow-up email, and even being mindful of online presence can improve one’s chances of being hired.

1. Update the resume

This could seem obvious, but it is often overlooked. One of the first things to do when applying for jobs is update the resume. This document is the primary source of information for any recruiter, so all the information it contains should be current and accurate. One can also add relevant details about volunteering opportunities, certifications, and career gaps to the resume. Once done, proofread the resume for any errors and rectify them promptly.

2. Send customized applications

Not every job posting has the same requirements. While it may be tempting to send the same resume and cover letter with every application, taking some time to tailor personal profiles to the unique roles and responsibilities of each job can help one secure a job faster.

To do this, one should start by looking at the job description and make a list of all the qualities the recruiter wants in a candidate. Then, one can pepper these attributes throughout their resume to improve their chances of hearing back from the company.

3. Be flexible

Some companies may be keen on hiring someone in days, while others take months to respond to applications. When applying for new jobs, whether online or in-person, applicants must be flexible to accommodate varying hiring timelines.

4. Explore multiple online job portals

Today, most companies post updates regarding job openings on their website. These are further advertised via job boards and professional networking platforms such as LinkedIn, Indeed, ZipRecruiter, CareerBuilder, Monster, Glassdoor, GetWork, FlexJobs, Ladders, and Recruitment.com. Applicants can use these platforms to find relevant jobs that are hiring right now. They can create a profile on multiple platforms and sign up to receive email updates and notifications regarding new job openings.

5. Tap into the network

One’s personal and professional network can be a great source of opportunities and news about job openings. Speak to friends, family, and acquaintances about updates they may have. These conversations can also become a source of valuable career advice.

Additionally, those looking for a new job may benefit from attending networking events like industry-specific events, job fairs, and expos to meet like-minded people and make new connections. If attending in-person events is not feasible, one can consider joining industry-specific groups and forums online and chatting with other professionals in the field.

6. Prepare for interviews

After the initial screening round, most companies will set up interviews with prospective hires. It’s essential to practice for these interviews, arming oneself with examples that showcase key skills. Additionally, when visiting or talking to someone at a business facility, one must be courteous and kind. Not only are these good personal values to uphold, but they can also positively impact one’s application.

7. Send follow-up emails

Within 24 hours of the interview, sending a follow-up email thanking the panel is good practice. This showcases one’s interest in the position and exhibits their professionalism.

8. Keep track of all applications

When applying for jobs, one may send their resume to multiple recruiters in one sitting. While doing so, one should make it a habit to add all application details to a spreadsheet. Then, one must keep track of when the application was sent and if any follow-up was received. This will help one avoid applying for a job twice.

9. Learn the keywords

Search engines, career websites, and recruiter software use certain keywords to shortlist candidates. These could be title or skill-based. Learn about the relevant keywords that are commonly used within the industry. Generally, these terms can be found across jobs that are hiring right now. Use new variations of these keywords to widen the search and find more listings.

10. Prioritize online presence

Social media has become an integral part of people’s lives today. Recognizing this, HR professionals and recruiters often run online checks to learn more about and screen applicants. That is why those looking for a job must tidy up their social media profiles to make them appear professional. Limiting what is visible to the public may also be a good idea.

11. Seek feedback following rejections

If a recruiter gets back with bad news, one should not be disheartened. Instead, one can use this opportunity to learn what went wrong during the application process and how it can be rectified. This feedback can be instrumental in helping one build a strong profile for other opportunities in the future.

12. Consider freelancing or gig work

At times, finding a suitable full-time role can take a while. In such cases, one can also consider taking up freelance or gig work. Job portals also list online jobs that do not follow a traditional full-time work and in-office setup. Not only will these opportunities be good sources of income, but they will also help the individual keep up with news in the industry and build their portfolio.
