7 emergency housing resources for seniors

The risk of potential homelessness can be quite alarming for seniors. So, it is crucial to be aware of the top emergency housing options available for seniors, as it can help them stay better prepared. These options are part of various government programs and initiatives designed to provide temporary or permanent housing for older individuals. Understanding what they do can help seniors approach them, especially if they need emergency housing.

1. 2-1-1

If a senior is at risk of homelessness and in need of emergency housing, the best option for a senior is to dial 2-1-1. This is a helpline number that connects individuals to local social services to get immediate assistance. In this case, seniors or caregivers can dial the number to seek assistance and referrals to find emergency housing for older people.  The helpline volunteers will assess their needs and guide them to appropriate services, which may include temporary housing options, rent assistance, or support for food and well-being. Another great advantage of the helpline number is that it is active 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. While anyone can call from anywhere in the country, eligibility for certain programs may vary.

2. HUD Find Shelter Tool

The Department of Housing and Urban Development, also known as HUD, also offers some resources that can help seniors and other individuals find temporary housing when facing the risk of homelessness. One of these resources is the Find Shelter Tool. It is an online resource that can be accessed via its official website. This website allows individuals to choose options tailored to their specific needs for help and assistance, directing them to the appropriate services. Additionally, those seeking emergency shelter can choose that option and then enter their location. The website will then guide them to relevant resources or local services. In addition to emergency housing, the site can also help identify nearby services for food and clothing assistance.

3. Continuum of Care

The CoC, or Continuum of Care, is another HUD initiative that provides emergency shelter to seniors at risk of homelessness. Several CoC bodies have been set up in all the states as a part of this initiative. Seniors can contact them when they face the risk of homelessness and need shelter. The CoC bodies will assess their eligibility and help them move into transitional and permanent housing. Beyond that, the CoC initiative also aims to make sure that seniors who have been moved into new housing never face the risk of homelessness again. CoC also runs homeless prevention initiatives, offering rental assistance to families at risk of homelessness. This allows those families to continue living in their current accommodation.

4. HUD Housing Voucher Program

Seniors who are at risk of homelessness because of some financial hardship preventing them from paying rent can consider applying for HUD’s Section 8 Voucher program. This program is designed to provide subsidized housing to seniors and at-risk families. As a part of this initiative, the government pays a huge chunk of the rent, giving seniors access to low-cost housing. Seniors must approach a regional public housing agency to apply for the program. They may also need to show proof of income and assets to qualify for the program.

5. Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly Program

This section is also introduced by the HUD to provide seniors with affordable housing. Along with that, the program assists seniors’ well-being so they can continue to live without worries. The Section 202 initiative also offers transportation and meals to seniors who need them. Seniors can log on to the HUD official website to look for Section 202 houses. Plus, to apply for the house, they can simply visit the Section 202 properties in their area and apply directly to the property manager. That said, it is important to note that only seniors above the age of 62 and below the low-income limit of their area are eligible for the Section 202 housing program.

6. HUD-VASH

The Department of Housing and Urban Development-VA Supportive Housing is designed for senior veterans facing the risk of homelessness. As a part of this program, senior veterans can receive housing and services that take care of their well-being. To apply for the program, they will have to contact Veteran Affairs.

7. VA Enhanced-Use Lease Program

This program, unlike the HUD-VASH program, is specially designed to provide housing to senior veterans who are facing homelessness. The VA leases unoccupied properties and transforms them into housing facilities to provide housing to senior veterans. These facilities can then be used to provide either temporary or permanent housing for senior veterans.

Apart from these initiatives, the HUD has several other plans that can make it easy to provide emergency housing to seniors and other homeless individuals. One such program is the Emergency Shelter Program, which will increase the number of emergency shelters across the country. Along with that, the government body also plans to renovate existing shelters to improve their quality.
